Aussie Speech Curtailed: Crikey! My Strine's Gone Wrong
G'day mates! So, I've been doing a heap of work lately on improving my SEO – you know, getting my website to rank higher in Google. And I gotta say, it's been a bit of a rollercoaster. One of the biggest challenges? My own writing style! Specifically, my beloved Aussie slang. Turns out, Google doesn't always understand "strewth" or "bonza." It’s a bit of a bummer, I’ll admit.

The Great Aussie Slang Experiment (and its epic fail)

I'm a proud Aussie, born and bred, and my speech is as colourful as a kookaburra's laugh. For years, I've peppered my writing with all sorts of slang. I figured, what's the point of writing if you can't have a bit of fun with it, right? I mean, who wants to read stuffy, boring content? Not me, that's for sure.
But my initial attempts at SEO were, to put it mildly, a bit of a shemozzle. My bounce rate was higher than a kangaroo on a pogo stick, and my rankings? Lower than a platypus's belly. I was starting to lose my marbles. It was truly heartbreaking, seeing all the time and effort go to waste. I was convinced my unique Aussie style was the problem.
I figured, “stuff it.” I'd try to fit in; write in a way the search engines understood. So, I tried to be super formal, using complex sentence structures and avoiding slang completely. I mean, I was practically writing in a different language altogether. My writing was becoming lifeless, and it was as exciting as watching paint dry.
Turns out, that wasn't the answer either. My traffic stayed flat. It's tough making a website rank highly when you're writing like a robot; people can spot the insincerity a mile away. Google seems to appreciate authentic voices too.

Finding the Sweet Spot: Aussie SEO Optimization

The truth is, there's a balance to be struck between using your unique style and optimizing for SEO. It's not an "either/or" situation. I learnt this the hard way. Here’s what I've discovered:
-
Keyword Research is Key: Before you even think about writing a word, do your keyword research. Use tools like Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or SEMrush to find out what people are actually searching for. Don't just focus on the primary keywords. Think about long-tail keywords and semantic keywords too. This helps Google understand the context of your content.
-
Strategic Slang Placement: Don't completely ditch your Aussie slang! Just use it sparingly. I now sprinkle it in organically, within the natural flow of my writing. That is, I use the common phrases in a way that is meaningful. I started using my slang for emphasis and to create emotion, as well as a better connection to the reader.
-
Meta Descriptions Matter: Your meta descriptions are crucial for attracting clicks from search engine results pages (SERPs). I make sure to inject some personality, using relevant keywords, but keeping it engaging and not sounding too robotic.
-
Internal Linking is Your Mate: Linking relevant pages within your website helps Google understand the structure of your site and improves the overall user experience, as well as SEO performance.
-
Content is King (and Queen!): Regardless of your writing style, you still need high-quality, engaging content that answers the readers’ questions comprehensively. The more valuable your content, the better your website's overall performance.
It’s been a journey, for sure. There's a lot to learn about optimizing for search engines, but I'm slowly but surely getting there. The key, I've found, is authenticity. Don't try to be someone you're not; embrace your unique voice, and just be clever about how you use it. And remember, even though Google might not always understand "fair dinkum," your readers will. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to crack a cold one and celebrate another SEO win!
